THE BEST PLAYING CONDITIONS

Doing some field work before you gamble at roulette is very worthwhile so first go and find the casinos near you that offer
the best playing conditions.

This is what to look for:

• A good safe neighbourhood free from violence.

• Single zero roulette wheel

• Close to home so you don’t spend too much time and money on travel.

• Pleasant surroundings and good ventilation. Avoid dark, negative dingy places.

• ‘Partage’ or ‘surrender’ or ‘en prison’ rules for zero.

 Choice of 'No smoking' areas.

• Low or no entrance fee with free meals or buffet.

• Tips to dealers are either forbidden or not compulsory

• Dealers don’t harass you for tips

• Easy access to a computer terminal linked to a live
game of roulette.

In the UK and some European cities such as Monte Carlo, France, the playing conditions are almost ideal.
In the UK for instance tipping the dealer is usually not allowed and there is no entrance fee to pay. You can also get free tea, coffee and simple food brought to you while you play. There is a very pleasant club atmosphere in most UK casinos today.
In some of these there are also many computer terminals all linked to a live wheel so that you can place your bets quickly and in private.

Favourable rules : ‘surrender’, ‘en prison’ or ‘partage’

Whenever possible play a single zero wheel with ‘surrender’, ‘en prison’ or ‘partage’ rule. This brings the casino house advantage from 2.7% down to 1.35% for the even chances.

Under the ‘surrender’ rule when zero is the winning number and the player has made a losing wager on one of the even chances: (Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low), instead of losing the entire bet, the player loses only half of the wager. Under the French 'en prison' rules the wager is left on the table (imprisoned) awaiting for the next play's outcome. If the player’s wager now wins (for instance if he had originally bet on ‘Black’ to win and the next number after the zero was spun is indeed a black number) then the player’s money is returned to him in full. If he loses because of another 0 or because a red number hits then the entire bet is lost. Both of these rules reduce the house advantage from 2.7% still further down to 1.35% on the even chance bets. Surrender is more widely used than ‘en prison’.

If you live in the US you can find single zero roulette wheels in a few casinos. However to make up for the lost profits casinos will often raise the minimum bet to $25 which means that you’ll have to expose a very large sum of money to the casino edge. Simply don't play there!
Try to find instead a low stake double zero table with ‘en prison rules’, that reduces the house edge from 5.24% to 2.63% on the even chances, and just play these even chance bets instead.

Unlike other casino games the house advantage for roulette stays the same for all types of bet placed on the betting table. So at a typical European zero wheel ( with no ‘en prison rule’) whether you bet on red, black, a column, a corner, a split, or a single number the house always enjoys the same edge of 2.7%. For other casino games this isn’t the case. The house edge usually varies depending on the type of bet you make. For instance in craps the house edge against you winning in the ‘don't pass/don't come’ line is only 1.41% whereas the bet ‘any 7’ has a huge house edge of 16.9%. (By the way in craps there is one bet which carries a virtually 0% advantage for the house! After the point has been established increase the pass-line bet by taking odds, laying a higher bet behind the original bet and you’ll be paid true odds if you win).
The fact that in roulette the odds against you’re always fixed to 2.7% irrespective of what you bet on makes roulette a much easier game to play because all the calculations are much simpler....
